When you first start baking snacks at home for your family, you’ll find that you prefer certain tools and appliances. These are my tried-and-true favorites that I’ve used for over a decade. Plus, I have a small galley kitchen, so I really use every single thing that has a place in my kitchen. It has to be valuable to take up space there.

Another benefit to baking muffins at home is that you can teach the kids alongside you! When kids are toddlers, they want to help. Dumping in muffin ingredients and mixing are great first steps towards kids being able to prepare their own food.

Now that my three are teens, it takes them no time at all to whip up a batch of homemade muffins since we keep basics in the pantry at all times. Since I’ve always baked muffins with wheat flour, I have both that and all-purpose flour on hand.

Like with most baking, common needs are mixing bowls, rubber spatulas and measuring cups. It’s also important to have oven mitts and cooling racks.

What are the various ways to bake muffins?

One thing I love about muffin batter is that you can use it for all sizes of muffins–mini, standard or jumbo! For kid snacks, I typically bake mini muffins. It also saves you having to use paper cupcake liners each time.

Why bake muffins at home?

I prefer to bake from scratch with whole food ingredients instead of buying box mixes. It turns out that it doesn’t take much more time, and the muffins taste so much better!

If you have allergies or special diets to work around, baking at home means you know exactly what’s in your muffins. You also avoid preservatives and any other negatives of processed foods.

As the mom of a child with a severe peanut allergy, it has always given me peace of mind to bake my own snacks and not rely on store bought treats that could be cross-contaminated.
