When you think about organizing your home for fall or back-to-school season, one of the main areas of your home that needs some attention is the entryway. Do you have routines for the kids (and parents) to follow with backpacks, umbrellas, shoes and boots?
2) Sort like with like and with a place in mind. The girls sorted rainboots and coats separate from pool gear. I had them try on last year's jackets and boots, and I took out all the pool items to store elsewhere.
3) Put the items back in place. Remember to use hooks to add vertical storage. We have hooks down low so the kids can reach their own bike helmets. There are also hooks for our library bags and umbrellas. A large shoe holder on the back wall stores shoes up off the floor, where there's a bin for balls and sports equipment.
Now that it's clean, it's been a lot easier to keep that way. I just remind the kids of what a great job they did organizing it, and they're quick to get their shoes put away in the right spot.
Then, as we enter into back to school time (still two weeks to go!), we'll practice our afterschool routine:
- Empty backpacks–put lunchboxes on the kitchen counter
- Hang up jackets/sweaters and put shoes away
- Wash your hands
Do you have routines that help you with entryway clutter? What works for you?
