We're on spring break! We drove all the way from DC to Chicago, and now we're exploring the city with our three tweens (ages 10, 10 and 12). It's been a blast! I wanted to share one activity we've done that is a lot of fun, especially for families with older kids. It's called Urban Adventure Quest, and I found it on LivingSocial a while back when I was looking for deals for our trip. It's the perfect way to explore Chicago with tweens!

Exploring Chicago with Tweens

It's an Amazing Race-style scavenger hunt that takes you around the downtown area to see Chicago landmarks, amazing architecture, and learn a bit of history about the city. Since we're huge Amazing Race fans, this was right up our alley. And while you are technically earning points for correct answers and “racing” against other teams online, we went at our own pace. We covered about two miles in about two hours, and we really enjoyed it!

You play on a smartphone, and for each question, you travel to a new location and then figure out the puzzle to get your next clue. We had to figure out a code, do several types of puzzles, and solve a rebus, among other activities. And we only used the internet for help once–for a song lyric that my husband and I couldn't remember. The questions and puzzles were just at the right level for tweens and teens (and their adults).

We got a great tour of the downtown area and along the riverfront. It was great to learn more about the buildings that we'd already taken note of. We were also introduced to some amazing historical sites. Since we weren't racing (the top teams beat us by a whole hour), we took our time looking around and enjoying each location.

It was a great introduction to parts of the city that we had planned to visit (like the Art Institute). We did pretty well! We completed the whole hunt with only a couple of incorrect answers. I highly recommend this fun activity for your family!

Urban Adventure Quest has 43 different hunts for many different cities across the country whether you're traveling with tweens or just want to tour your home city. We're planning to tackle the Washington DC hunt later this year. In fact, I was thinking it would make a fun (and unusual) birthday party activity for when my son turns 13.
