As part of its North America tour, Disney’s Newsies will be playing at The National Theatre in Washington DC from June 9-21. This high-energy musical was the winner of the 2012 Tony Awards® for Best Score and Best Choreography and is filled with song and dance. The score is by one of my favorite Disney composers, Alan Menken (who did Beauty and the Beast, among others), along with Jack Feldman. It’s the story of a band of underdogs who become unlikely heroes when they stand up to the most powerful men in New York. There’s so much to talk about with your kids before and after this show–like how to speak up for what’s right and stay true to who you are. The cast includes many young actors (some as young as 9!), and my kids always enjoy seeing these amazing talents on stage.
Newsies is traveling throughout the East Coast and Canada now through November, so find your local city. We’re excited that it’s here in Washington DC at The National Theatre.
We’ve seen shows in The National Theatre before, and there are a lot of family-friendly productions in store for the 2015-16 season as well. My son is taking theater in middle school next year and pays more attention to the sets and lighting than the actors sometimes. He’s excited to see this show! If you’ve never attended a theater show with your child(ren), see my tips on Taking Kids to the Theater.

We’ve mostly seen local school shows for the past few years. We saw Cinderella and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe at Lake Braddock. At our local elementary school, we saw The Wizard of Oz, Annie, and Peter Pan. We would love to see a bigger scale production like Newsies.

And there’s an LB alum in this show. So cool!
