This should not be needed, but it is where we are today. I’m rounding up the many national and DC-local offers of shutdown assistance to federal workers, government contractors, and others affected by furlough.
If your family was one of the many who did not receive a paycheck today, now is the time to get on top of your bills.
Figure out what liquid funds (cash) you have available in the bank and the status of any debt. Identify the due dates of major bills like your mortgage, car payment, medical bills, utilities, etc.
Most of the banks and companies listed below are asking you to call to see if you qualify for assistance. Yes, I know. No one uses the phone anymore. Get any documents you need, grab a snack and a drink, and plan to be on hold until you get the information you need.
It is better to be proactive–meaning you get ahead of any payments before they are late. It is harder to request postponement or late fee forgiveness if you have not communicated with them beforehand.
