I have three small children. There is dirt. There is clutter. There is often chaos. And I have learned that I can’t do it all. When I had the twins, everyone told me, “just lower your standards a little on the housecleaning thing.” And yeah, I do that. A lot more than I’d like.
What keeps me sane is keeping one room clean. For me, it’s the dining room. It’s the first room as you walk into the house, so it’s the obvious place to lay things on the table, on the buffet, on the floor, etc. It’s where the clutter collects, but it’s also where we eat and spend time together, and that’s very important to me. So several times each day I take a few minutes to put the clutter away, wash the table down, sweep, pick gunk off the high chairs, whatever I need to do to have a big open space to help keep my mind clear and off the utter mess of toys that’s in the living room. Sometimes I’ll sit at the big empty (clean) table and just stare out the window, at least for a moment.
