Gluten-Free Thanksgiving Stuffing Recipes

Serve one of these gluten-free Thanksgiving stuffing recipes with your holiday turkey this year.

One of the most challenging dishes at Thanksgiving can be stuffing. Some like it with fruit like apples, raisins or cranberries, others prefer it with sausage. Some like cornbread, others don’t. Even in my own home, the five of us all disagree on how to make it.

Add in a gluten-free family member, and now you’ve got trouble! I found some fantastic gluten-free stuffing recipes that look like great additions to our Thanksgiving feast this year. I can’t decide what to try first.

Does stuffing have gluten?

Traditional Thanksgiving stuffing is made with bread, so assume that there is gluten unless you know the host has used a recipe for gluten free stuffing.

If you’re planning to make your own stuffing, you have the choice of using gluten-free bread for a traditional cubed stuffing or to use an alternative like rice or quinoa as the base for your stuffing.

Be sure to check that ingredients you add to stuffing (like chicken broth, for example), are also gluten-free.

Don’t want to cook from scratch?

I get it. Holidays are busy enough. Consider using one of these pre-packaged stuffing mixes instead:

You can also check your local Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods for their boxed store-brand gluten free stuffing mixes.

GF Stuffing Recipes and Alternatives

Remember that you don’t have to serve stuffing at all on Thanksgiving! Mashed potatoes are naturally gluten-free, and they’re a delicious side dish.

If you do want some sort of “dressing,” consider any of these delicious alternatives to wheat-filled stuffing. Some use gluten-free bread as the base, but others are made solely with rice or quinoa instead.

And remember that these recipes for gluten-free stuffing aren’t just for the holidays. Give one of them a try as a special side dish any time of year. You may find a new favorite!
