Making a blueberry crisp is easier than you think! This quick and simple dessert recipe comes together in about 15 minutes and then it’s into the oven for about 45 minutes. This fresh baked dessert can be served warm from the oven or reheated.
When are blueberries in season in the United States?
Blueberry picking season runs from about April through September depending on conditions, temperatures, and location.
If you have a blueberry bush on your property you’ll be lucky to have fresh, healthy, delicious fruit on hand all summer long! I find that fresh blueberries taste best and are awesome for homemade recipes just like this blueberry crisp.
How can I store blueberries for later use?
Once they are picked and cleaned, blueberries do hold up well in the refrigerator for quite a while. Ours never seem to last too long because we use them up so quickly. They’re delicious in cereal or just as a snack!
If you want to freeze blueberries, that’s also a great option. First, make sure they are completely dry. Then spread them out on a baking sheet and freeze for a few hours. They can then be dumped into a freezer storage container.
This will help make it easier to use them in small amounts. When you freeze them mostly dry and separated they don’t congeal into one big lump!
Here’s what you’ll need for this delicious blueberry crisp recipe:
- fresh blueberries
- maple syrup
- ground cinnamon
- ground allspice
- dried rosemary (or fresh)
These are the ingredients for the topping:
- old-fashioned rolled oats
- flour (use almond flour for gluten-free)
- sliced almonds
- honey
- unsalted butter
- salt
If you like, you can also include 1 cup of Greek yogurt to serve with the delicious crisp! Personally, I like to top mine with some vanilla ice cream!
How to make homemade blueberry crisp:
- Place the top oven rack in the center position and preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Place blueberries in a large bowl. Add maple syrup, cinnamon, allspice, rosemary, and salt. Toss to combine and set aside.
- Combine the topping ingredients in a separate bowl and stir until oats are thoroughly coated and all ingredients are well combined. Set aside.
- Pour blueberry mixture into a 10” cast iron skillet and spread into an even layer. Spread the topping evenly across the top in a uniform layer, as well.
- Place into a preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes. If the top layer is nicely browned at this point, cover the dish loosely with aluminum foil to prevent over-browning. Bake for another 15-20 minutes or until the blueberry crisp is nice and bubbling. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool for 5-10 minutes.
- Serve warm with some Greek yogurt, if desired. Enjoy!
