When you’re shopping frugally, snack foods can be a budget-buster. We’ve learned to replace expensive individually-packaged items with homemade muffins and other frugal snacks, which not only saves money but is also healthier for us.

We love this roasted spiced chickpeas recipe because it makes for a salty, crunchy snack that is also healthy.

What other names do chickpeas have?

Chickpeas, also called garbanzo beans, are great alternative to nuts, which are so expensive.

It’s so easy! Just combine your favorite oil with a few spices, and coat a can of drained chickpeas.

Roasting them changes their texture to a crunchy delight–even my non-bean-loving husband thinks these are great!

While they’re in the oven, give the baking sheet a shake to toss the chickpeas so they’ll roast evenly.

How to substitute dried beans for canned beans:

You can use dried beans in this recipe. You’ll need to reconstitute the beans before using them in this recipe. It’s a simple process, each bag will have directions on how best to accomplish this, it usually requires soaking the beans in water overnight!

After the beans have been soaked they’re ready to be used in this recipe. You can compare the beans based on ounces. Keep in mind that usually bags with dried beans will have more than the cans so you might not need as much.

Can roasted spiced chickpeas be stored for later?

These will store for up to two weeks, but we’ve never had that happen. They get eaten too fast!

I find the texture to be similar to Terra Chips or veggie chips–a nice crunchy, salty snack.

The best part is chickpeas are high in protein, high in fiber, and have no fat, so this makes for a fabulous healthy snack.

My husband–who is diabetic–really likes these. Normally, he won’t eat beans at all!

Roasted Spiced Chickpeas also make a fabulous topping for salads. They add crunch, texture and a little protein.

This is SUCH a good idea. I've been trying to eat healthier snacks lately, but you're right it can get expensive! Plus, I like to slice apples and stuff ahead of time so that they're easier to munch. I'm going to HAVE to try this, since it's a healthy, ready-to-go snack. Great job!
