These delicious turkey meatballs are easy to make and they have a gorgeous Thai red curry sauce that everyone loves. It’s the perfect weekend dinner recipe, better than takeout!

If you’ve never tried a Thai red curry sauce, you have to give these meatballs a go. It’s the perfect balance of spicy and sweet, and meatballs are the perfect vessel. Even kids like these turkey meatballs!

I’m always on the hunt for meals that can be prepped in advance. And while this recipe isn’t as frugal as others we eat often, it’s still way less expensive than ordering Thai food for the five of us!,

What you need to make these Thai turkey meatballs:

I’m going to break it down into categories so you can see what ingredients you will need for the turkey meatballs the Thai red curry sauce, and the sides as well.

Turkey Meatballs

  • 1 lb ground turkey or chicken
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon mild chili paste
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon light soy sauce or Tamari
  • 1 teaspoon onion salt
  • 1 Tablespoon coconut oil (for cooking)

Red Curry Sauce

  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, finely grated
  • ½ Tablespoon mild chili paste
  • 2 Tablespoons creamy peanut butter
  • 1 can unsweetened coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • ½ Tablespoon soy sauce
  • ½ lime, juiced
  • 1-2 Tablespoons red curry paste

Sides And Toppings

  • 1 cup white rice, for serving
  • green onions for garnish
  • sesame seeds for garnish

It might seem like we’re using a lot of ingredients here, but they all play an important role. We will be building a complex flavor profile for this delicious dinner recipe and let me assure you…it’s worth it!

How to make turkey meatballs with Thai curry sauce:

  1. Cook your rice according to package instructions and set aside until ready to serve.
  2. Combine all meatball ingredients in a large bowl. Roll into balls and set aside.
  3. Heat 1 Tbsp coconut oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Once the pan is hot, brown the meatballs in the pan. Once they are browned, cover the pan and let them cook for 12 minutes or until fully cooked. Cooking times will depend on the size of the meatballs too.
  4. Once the meatballs are almost finished cooking, it’s time to make the curry sauce. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, add all of your sauce ingredients to the pan. Whisk until the sauce is smooth.  Cook for 2 minutes or until warm.
  5. Serve over rice and sprinkle with green onions and sesame seeds.

Are these meatballs very spicy?

No! It’s a common misconception that curry is spicy. While some curry recipes can be very spicy the flavors in the sauce for these delicious homemade meatballs is very mild and family friendly.

If you are worried about it being too spicy you can feel free to add your seasonings a little at a time, tasting the sauce as you go. This way you can totally control the level of spice in the finished dish!

Can I freeze this recipe?

You can definitely make these meatballs, sauce and all, and freeze them for use at a later time.

If you want to meal prep you can make a big batch of these Thai curry meatballs and put them into the freezer for a quick meal that only requires a bit of reheating.

Ingredients

For Meatballs:

  • 1lb ground turkey or chicken
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon mild chilli paste
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 teaspoon onion salt
  • 1 Tablespoon coconut oil

For Sauce:

  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 1 ½ teaspoons mild chili paste
  • 2 Tablespoons creamy peanut butter
  • 1 can unsweetened coconut milk (13.5oz)
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 ½ teaspoons soy sauce or tamari
  • juice from ½ lime
  • 1-2 Tablespoons red curry paste

For Serving:

  • 1 cup white rice (to make 3 cups cooked)
  • green onions, if desired
  • sesame seeds, if desired

Instructions

  1. Cook rice according to package instructions and set aside until time to serve.
  2. Combine all meatball ingredients except coconut oil in a large bowl. Roll into 2-3" diameter meatballs.
  3. Heat 1 Tbsp coconut oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Once the pan is hot, brown the meatballs in the pan. Once browned, cover the pan and let cook for 12 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. Cooking times may vary based on the size of the meatballs.
  4. To make curry sauce, add all the sauce ingredients to a saucepan over medium-high heat. Whisk until sauce is smooth. Cook for 2 minutes or until warm.
  5. Serve meatballs and sauce over rice. To garnish, sprinkle with green onions and sesame seeds, if desired.
