Snickerdoodles are the perfect blend of sugary sweetness with a little cinnamon flair. They are a great cookie for the holidays, but we enjoy them year round. This recipe for snickerdoodles is such a simple homemade cookie recipe.
You could probably also use this base as a simple sugar cookie as well. I’ll share that info below.
I like making this snickerdoodles cookies recipe with the kids because we can make an assembly line, so it goes quick and easy. Before I know it, we’ve got them all on the baking sheets, and they’re coming out of the oven, warm and delicious!
What you’ll need to make snickerdoodles:
- Sugar
- Butter
- Eggs
- Baking Soda
- Vanilla
- Salt
- Flour
- cream of tartar
What is used for the topping?
- white sugar
- ground cinnamon
How to make snickerdoodles cookies:
- Preheat oven to 375.
- Combine sugar and butter in a mixing bowl. Once the mixture is nice and smooth, add the eggs and vanilla. Beat or mix again until a smooth consistency.
- In a separate bowl, mix the dry ingredients. Slowly stir those into the butter mixture until the cookie dough is well mixed.
- Mix the sugar and cinnamon for the topping either in a bowl or on a plate. I like to do this on a plate and then roll the cookie dough balls through it.
- Roll batter into 2-inch size balls. Place on cookie sheet. Press each ball of dough down to flatten.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes.
My cookies are too crunchy, what happened?
Any recipe for snickerdoodles should note that you don’t want to over bake them or they lose that sort of outer edge chewy-ness and go full on crispy.
Be careful and keep an eye on them while they are baking, depending on your oven and how well is distributes heat you might need to take them out after 7-8 minutes and let them finish on the baking sheets for a few minutes and then move them to a cooling rack!
Can I use this recipe for snickerdoodles as a base for sugar cookies?
I think you could easily leave off the outer coating and use this as a base for sugar cookies. You will still need to roll them into ball and press them out. This wouldn’t be a great recipe for cookie cutters.
If you just need a simple, round, regular old sugar cookie though…give this a try without the cinnamon and you might be surprised by how versatile the batter is!
How many cookies does this recipe make?
If you are making 2 inch balls of dough this should make about 18 cookies. 32 cookies per batch is possible with smaller dough balls (1 inch in size). This recipe is easy to double if you need more cookies so keep that in mind.
We usually make a double batch so we have some to eat at home and enough to share with others!
