I’ll show you how to make a crockpot ham recipe and once you try it, you’ll never go back to baking a ham.
We use a brown sugar substitute since my husband is diabetic. That also makes this recipe low carb and great for anyone on Keto. But you can use regular brown sugar if you prefer.
One of the best things about making this recipe for crockpot ham is that you can free up the oven to do other things. A close second is that this is the most moist and delicious ham thanks to the slow cooker. There’s very little moisture escaping, so you don’t have to worry about drying out your ham.
What do I need to make a ham in the crockpot?
Making ham in the crockpot will of course require a slow cooker. A typical family-size slow cooker is 6- or 8-quarts. You’ll need to make sure the ham you buy can fit!
If you have a smaller crockpot, you’ll need to find a ham about half the size of the one in this recipe.
You will also need these ingredients to make the most delicious recipe for crockpot ham. They’re all easy to get and should be readily available in a typical grocery store.
If you need to make substitutions, just try and keep it as close as possible to the list. For example, you’d need more dried garlic to equal the flavor of the fresh stuff!
- 4 to 5 pound bone-in ham (check to make sure it fits your slow cooker)
- butter
- Dijon mustard
- brown sugar (or substitute like Swerve)
- fresh garlic
If you are not worried about carbs or sugar you can swap out the Swerve for brown sugar. Since I’m watching Weight Watchers points and also cooking for my diabetic husband, we use a low carb sweetener.
How to make my crockpot ham recipe:
Wait till you see how simple this recipe really is. You’ll wonder why you didn’t try this sooner!
- Pour the water in the slow cooker and place ham on top.
- Mix together all of the other ingredients and pour the over the top of your ham.
- Cover the crockpot and cook on low for about 6 to 8 hours. The timing will depend on how large your ham is, this should cover those of you using a 4 to 5 pound ham as mentioned above.
- Carefully remove the ham. Slice and serve.
If you are using a much smaller ham you can cut back the cooking time. Use the 4-5 pounds for 6-8 hours as a comparison and just cut it in half / quarters to make the time suit the weight of your ingredients!
Don’t want to cook for the holiday?

Just an FYI. Diabetic for over 50 years. Diabetic diet reading a nutrition label, you should look at grams of carbs, not sugars. Swerve is the same amount of carbs as light brown sugar, but quadruple the cost.
